- deafness (the quality of being deaf; the inability to perceive sounds)
- savā kurlumā viņš nav troksni dzirdējis ― in (= because of) his deafness he didn't hear the noise
- paaugstināts trokšņa līmenis rada daudzas slimības: nervu, psihiskās, sirds un asinsvadu slimības, tas var būt par iemeslu kurlumam ― increased noise levels cause many diseases: nervous, mental, cardiovascular diseases, it can (also) be the cause for deafness
- deafness (unwillingness to hear, to listen)
- tev kurlums iesēdies ausīs, un tu nedzirdi vairs ― to you, deafness has set in the ears, and you will no longer hear
Usage notes
[edit]Level intonation is the standard intonation for the term kurls (“deaf”) according to Latviešu etimoloģijas vārdnīca, pronunciation with a broken intonation is very common, however.
