From Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *kulub (to slow cook in a tightly covered vessel). Compare Javanese ꦔꦸꦭꦸꦧ꧀ (ngulub) , Sasak kulup (to cook by boiling), Tagalog kulob (tightly-covered, stuffy).
