Borrowed from Malay kerapu, from Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *kuʀapu (the sea perch, giant rock cod, giant grouper, Epinephelus spp.). Compare Indonesian kerapu, Pangutaran Sama kulapu, Cebuano pugapo, Bikol Central pugapo, Ilocano kurapo, Tagalog kulapo, Tiruray kurafu, Ivatan korapo, Yami kozapo, Palauan ksaw and Sundanese kurapu.
