From Old Swedish krȳsta, from Old Norse *krjósta, from Proto-Germanic *kreustaną (to grind).

  1. to tense the muscles of the abdomen in order to expel something (usually feces or a baby); to push, to bear down
  2. (usually with fram) to express oneself in a strained or contrived manner
    Han krystade fram ett leende
    He forced a smile
    Hon krystade fram ett tal
    She delivered a contrived speech
