[edit]From Old Norse krœkill, derived from the verb krœkja (modern Icelandic krækja), or from a Proto-Germanic *krōkilaz, in either case ultimately derived from Proto-Germanic *krōkaz (“hook”). Equivalent to krækja + -ill.
