- a species of black and white in the Vanga, particularly the White-crested helmetshrike and also possibly the Black-and-white Shrike-flycatcher. These birds serve as a traditional omen or symbol of death or danger.
- kowéè tó ké tí kò ha, ewu ń bẹ(Yoruba saying regarding the kowee bird)
- If kowee bird that cries does not remedy the pain, there is danger lurking
