Etymology

[edit]

korva (ear) +‎ sieni (mushroom)

Pronunciation

[edit]
  • IPA(key): /ˈkorʋɑˌsie̯ni/, [ˈko̞rʋɑ̝ˌs̠ie̞̯ni]
  • Rhymes: -ieni
  • Hyphenation(key): korva‧sieni

Noun

[edit]

korvasieni

  1. brain mushroom, turban fungus, Gyromitra esculenta
Korvasienien syönti on turvallista vain, kun ne on valmistettu oikein; muuten ne ovat tappavan myrkyllisiä.
Brain mushrooms are only safe to eat if correctly prepared, and otherwise they are lethally poisonous.
  2. (loosely) false morel, any mushroom of the genus Gyromitra; (in the plural) the genus Gyromitra

Usage notes

[edit]

korvasieni, in the sense Gyromitra esculenta, is often ambiguously translated into English as false morel or even more misleadingly as morel (a term which usually refers to mushrooms referred to in Finnish as huhtasieni). The latter is a particularly dangerous mistranslation, as brain mushrooms are highly toxic (even potentially lethally so) and need to be prepared correctly in order to be safe for consumption.
