Etymology

[edit]

Related with regional German Kanker (arachnid”, especially “harvestman). It suggests itself to derive the word from Proto-West Germanic *kankr (crab), particularly since the movement of harvestmen looks somewhat similar to that of crabs. In this process the term may, however, have absorbed older words derived from *gangan (to walk). Moreover, dialectal Swedish kångro (spider) has also been linked with Finnish kankuri (weaver); compare German Weberknecht (harvestman).
