Unknown. Perhaps a sound-symbolic alternation of koomáalu (“soft”), with which it shares syllabic structure and vowels.

Compare the probably unrelated Savi [script needed] (khákeṛa, “hard”), Dameli [script needed] (kakər̆, “hard”).
