Etymology

Borrowed from Greek κοχλίας (kochlías, snail), with the ending -angoz from synonymous salyangoz (snail). Compare Middle Armenian կոխլանճ (koxlanč), Armenian կողինջ (koġinǰ), which underwent a similar contamination. Possibly phonetically influenced by koklanmak (to be smelled).
