From Middle High German klopfen, from Old High German klophōn, clophōn, from Proto-West Germanic *kloppōn, from Proto-Germanic *kluppōną. Cognate with Dutch kloppen, English club. See also the informal doublet kloppen (to thump, beat, fight).
