[edit]16th century, from Middle High German *klicken, attested in zerklicken (“to break an eggshell”). Either cognate with or analogous to Dutch klikken (15th c.), English click (16th c.), French cliquer (14th c.). All ultimately imitative. The computing sense is a semantic loan from English.
