Inherited from Old Norse kleggr. Compare Danish klæg (which may be a Norwegian borrowing) and English cleg.

The dialectal conjugated forms having -ggj- (like kleggjer, kleggjen etc.) are from Old Norse kleggi (compare Faroese and Icelandic kleggi).
