[edit]From Middle Low German or Dutch ketter, from Latin catharus, from Ancient Greek καθαρός (katharós) with unknown origin. Doublet of katar (a Cathar). Compare to Danish kætter, Norwegian Bokmål kjetter and Swedish kättare.
