From Classical Persian خبر (xabar), from Arabic خَبَر (ḵabar), likely borrowed through a neighboring Indo-Aryan language such as Hindi ख़बर (xabar), Sylheti ꠈꠛꠞ (xóbor), Assamese খবৰ (khobor) or Bengali খবর (khobor). Also compare Odia ଖବର (khabara​), Nepali खबर (khabar), Gujarati ખબર (khabar), Punjabi ਖ਼ਬਰ (xabar), Marathi खबर (khabar), Kannada ಖಬರು (khabaru), Telugu కబురు (kaburu).
