From Proto-Khasian *kʰnaːj, from Proto-Mon-Khmer *kn₁(i)ʔ. Cognate with Pnar khne, Khmu [Cuang] kneʔ, Mon ဂၞိ (nɔeˀ), Semai kekeni, Bahnar kơne.
