[edit]From Middle High German kezzel, from Old High German kezzil, from Proto-West Germanic *katil, from Proto-Germanic *katilaz (“kettle, bucket, vessel”), probably a borrowing from Latin catīllus (“small bowl”). Cognate with German Kessel, English kettle. Doublet of kaiin (“washbasin”).
