Etymology

[edit]

Compound of kenraali +‎ harjoitus. This is probably originally a misconception of Swedish generalrepetition (dress rehearsal). In Swedish as well as in English the word "general" means both a military rank and "concerned with, applicable to, or affecting the whole", whereas in Finnish kenraali is used in the latter sense only in this term.

Pronunciation

[edit]
  • IPA(key): /ˈkenrɑːliˌhɑrjoi̯tus/, [ˈk̟e̞nrɑ̝ːliˌhɑ̝rjo̞i̯t̪us̠]
  • Rhymes: -ɑrjoitus
  • Hyphenation(key): ken‧raali‧harjoi‧tus
