Said to be borrowed from Spanish candil, from Arabic قِنْدِيل (qindīl), from Classical Syriac ܩܢܕܠܐ (qandēlā), from Ancient Greek κάνδηλα (kándēla), from Latin candēla (candle). Doublet of kandila. See also Maranao kinding.
