Regarding the obsolete variant probably inherited from Arabic كُفْرِيّة (kufriyya, blasphemousness, a blasphemy, an act of unbelief). Alternatively formed from the adjective kiefer, from Arabic كافِر (kāfir), +‎ -ija.
