[edit]From Malay kebut, from Proto-Malayic *kabut, from Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *kabut. Doublet of kabut.
- The colloquial senses are semantic loan from Betawi and Javanese ꦏꦼꦧꦸꦠ꧀ (kebut, “duster”), probably from Malay kebut (“to clean the dust”).
- The speeding sense is a Javanese ꦏꦼꦧꦸꦠ꧀ (kebut, “to speed”), probably as extension of "to disappear" sense.
