[edit]Uncertain. Possibly from:
- Borrowed from Malay kelekati (“areca-nut cutter”), from Tamil. Compare Maranao kalakati. See also Tamil கத்தி (katti, “knife”).
- Borrowed from Spanish alicate (“pliers”), from Arabic لَقَّاط (laqqāṭ). Possible doublet of alikate.
