Etymology

Uncertain. Perhaps a borrowing from and alteration of Old Norse skrælingi.[1] According to Online Etymology Dictionary, Hans Egede claimed that "the Eskimos themselves told him that they got the name from the Norsemen who once lived in Greenland."
