[edit]From Japanese 怪獣 (かいじゅう, kaijū), from Middle Chinese 怪 (kˠuɛiH, “strange, fantastic”) + 獸 (ɕɨuH, “beast”) (compare Mandarin 怪獸/怪兽 (guàishòu)).
