From Proto-Aslian *kaaʔ (fish), from Proto-Mon-Khmer *kaʔ (fish). Cognate with Mon က (kaˀ), Khmer កា (kaa), Vietnamese , Eastern Lawa กะ (kaʼ), Central Nicobarese kâa, Khasi 'kha.
