Borrowed from Russian кашта́н (kaštán) and Polish kasztan, both from Latin castanea, from Ancient Greek κᾰ́στᾰνᾰ (kástana, sweet chestnuts). Compare German Kastanie, French châtaigne, Italian castagna.
