Inherited from Ottoman Turkish قرق ییلده بر (ḳırḳ yılda bir),[1] equivalent to kırk (forty) +‎ yıl (year) +‎ -da (locative suffix) +‎ bir (a, one, indefinite determiner), literally once in/every forty years.
