[edit]Inherited from Ottoman Turkish قرق ییلده بر (ḳırḳ yılda bir),[1] equivalent to kırk (“forty”) + yıl (“year”) + -da (locative suffix) + bir (“a, one, indefinite determiner”), literally “once in/every forty years”.
