Etymology

Literally, "Ashes on your head!". A widespread statement of dissatisfaction in many languages in the Middle East. Compare Gilaki خاک بی تي سر (xåk bə ti sər, “Put ashes on your head!”), Kurmanji xwelî li serê te be (“ashes on your head!”), dialectal Armenian մոխիրս գլխիդ (moxirs glxid, “my ashes on your head!”).
