[edit]From Proto-Nuristani *kr̥ttā (“beam, timber”) (with retention of k via earlier *kr-), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *kart- (“to cut”), from Proto-Indo-European *(s)kert- (“to cut”), extension of *(s)ker- (“to cut”). Borrowing from Kamkata-viri kaṭë (“beam, timber”) is excluded because of the initial vowel.
