Swedish
[edit]Etymology
[edit]Compare Danish kæmpe and Norwegian kjempe
Pronunciation
[edit]Verb
[edit]kämpa (present kämpar, preterite kämpade, supine kämpat, imperative kämpa)
- to fight
- Riddaren kämpade mot draken
- The knight fought the dragon
- att kämpa för rättvisa villkor
- to fight for fair conditions
- Han kämpade mot cancern
- He battled (idiomatically) his cancer (strida (“battle”) sounds overly militaristic in Swedish here)
- Kämpa!
- Fight! / Give it all you got!
- to struggle
- Han kämpade med ekonomin
- He struggled with his economy
Usage notes
[edit]Like kamp, kämpa can be thought of as having the basic meaning struggle, except often unidiomatic as a translation. As an example, "Kämpa!" (Fight! / Give it all you got!) can be more literally translated as "Struggle!", as in "Put in (maximum) effort!"
