[edit]Inherited from Ottoman Turkish كاشف (kāşif, “who discovers or reveals, who investigates, who estimates the value, (formerly) a kind of sheriff under the Memluks in Egypt”),[1][2] from Arabic كَاشِف (kāšif, “reagent, radio detector”), active participle of كَشَفَ (kašafa, “to uncover, to reveal, to expose, to investigate”).[3]
