jupará

From Wiktionary, the free dictionary

Portuguese

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

Borrowed from Old Tupi îupará.

Pronunciation

[edit]

  • Rhymes: -a
  • Hyphenation: ju‧pa‧rá

Noun

[edit]

jupará m (plural juparás)

  1. kinkajou (Potos flavus)
    Synonyms: quincaju, macaco-da-meia-noite
  2. (loosely) olingo (any mammal of the genus Bassaricyon)
    Synonyms: olingo, gogó-de-sola
  3. (loosely) any mammal of the subfamily Potosinae

Usage notes

[edit]
  • The gender of this Portuguese zoonym is always masculine: when the gender of the being itself must be specified, use “jupará macho” for male, and “jupará fêmea” for female. Here, fêmea is treated as an undeclinable noun and don't necessarily need to agree in gender with the referent, but would change to fêmeo if so.
