Inherited from Old French jumel, gemel (cf. also the less often used French dialectal form gémeau, as well as Gémeaux), from Latin gemellus, diminutive of geminus. Compare Italian gemello, Portuguese gémeo, Romanian geamăn, Spanish gemelo.
