[edit]From Proto-Turkic *jar (“bat”) + *kājnat (“wing”). Cognate to Kyrgyz жарганат (jarganat), Southern Altai јарганат (ǰarganat), Karakalpak jarg'anat, Nogai ярганат (yarganat), Bashkir ярғанат (yarğanat), Tatar ярканат (yarkanat), Turkmen ýargānat, Northern Altai тьарганат (tʹarganat), Khakas чарханат (çarxanat), Shor чарғанат (čarɣanat), Yakut сарыы кынат (sarıı kınat), etc. Compare also Turkish yarasa, etc.
