From Proto-Finnic *jämedä, from Proto-Finno-Permic *jämä-. Cognates include Livonian jamdõ, Votic and Ingrian jämmiä, dialectal Finnish jämeä, Livvi jämei, Ludian d'ämed and Veps jämed.
