Etymology

Either a reduction or reanalysis of synonymous īxxāyōtl (tear), from īxtli (eye) + xāyōtl (discharge), or a separate formation based on īxtli (eye) +‎ āyōtl (watery substance), forming a minimal pair with īxxāyōtl.
