[edit]iso (“big”) + kauris (“small deer”). Coined by Nisäkäsnimistötoimikunta (Committee for Mammal Names) in 2008. Before that this animal was called saksanhirvi (literally “German elk”) or punahirvi (literally “red elk”).

[edit]- This term is slowly gaining ground, but saksanhirvi still appears to be clearly more commonly used (in 2017).
