From Proto-Germanic *īsarnasmiþaz. Cognate with Old Frisian *īsernsmith, Old Saxon īsarnsmith, Old Dutch *īsarnsmith, Old High German īsarnsmid, Old Norse járnsmiðr. Equivalent to īsern (iron) +‎ smiþ (smith).
