Etymology

Borrowed from Kapampangan ingay (noise), older form of inge, from Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *qiŋəʀ (loud, unpleasant noise). Expected inherited form for Tagalog would be *ingig, *inig. Compare Ilocano ingar (growl), Pangasinan ingal (noise), Hanunoo ingay (noise), Cebuano ingog (piercing sound), and Malay hingar (noise).
