Pronunciation

[edit]
  • IPA(key): /ʔimbá/, [ʔimbá̤]

Noun

[edit]

imbá (vocative ímbo)

  1. father
    ɛ́ɛ káa walébe ímbesa imbáne
this man is mine and Wale's father
  2. (in the plural) paternal uncles
  3. (in the feminine) owner

Usage notes

[edit]

In the feminine, this word refers to the owner of a house, which, in Hamer society, is always a woman. It is one of only two kinship terms which inflect for gender, the other being kána (younger sibling).

In the sense "uncles," specifically refers to the referent's father's younger brothers.
