[edit]Compound of ilmu (“science”) + hitung (“to count, to compute”), from Malay ilmu hitung, a calque of Dutch cijferkunst (“arithmetic”, literally “to compute + art; ability”) and Dutch rekenkunde (“arithmetic”).
