From Proto-Inuit *ǝli-t- (learn, teach, know, practise sorcery, curse, recognise), from Proto-Eskimo *ǝli-t- (learn, know, recognise). Compare ilikkarpaa (has learnt it), ilisimavoq (knows, is wise), ilisiippoq (conjures), ilisiitsoq (witch), and ilisaraa (recognise).
