From Alanic *xwarz, from Proto-Sarmatian *xwarz, from Proto-Sarmatian *xwarzi, from Proto-Iranian *xwaržah (pleasant; sweet). Cognate with Iron Ossetian хорз (xorz), Digor Ossetian хуарз (xwarz, good), Balochi اَوَرزا(awarza "pleasant, agreeable"), Middle Persian [Book Pahlavi needed] (hwʾlyst' /⁠xwālist⁠/, sweetest), Avestan 𐬓𐬀𐬭𐬆𐬰𐬌𐬱𐬙𐬀- (xᵛarəzišta-, sweetest), Old Armenian ախորժ (axorž).
