Etymology

From Proto-Tai *χɔːjᴮ (slave).[1]

In Zuojiang Zhuang, cognate with hoiq (Chongzuo dialect),[2] hoij (Ningming dialect),[2] koij (Longzhou and Daxin dialects).[2]

In Central Tai, cognate with Nong Zhuang koij (Yanshan dialect)[2] or kuaij (Guangnan dialect).[2]

In Southwestern Tai, cognate with Isan ข้อย, Lao ຂ້ອຍ (khǭi), ᦃᦾᧉ (ẋoay²).
