      Just imagine Mr. Bird, with his poor sciatic leg, standing at the head of State Street with a bucket of water in one hand and a little engine in the other, and see him, when the telegraph strikes an alarm, starting off with all his might, hippity, hoppity, almost two miles an hour, for a fire which may be one or five miles away !
