From Proto-Germanic *himinaz (cloud cover, sky). Cognate with Old English heofon, Old Saxon hevan, Gothic 𐌷𐌹𐌼𐌹𐌽𐍃 (himins). Ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *ḱemen-, *ḱemer- (stone, cloud, sky).
