[edit]Derived from Proto-Iranian *ham- (“together, joint”) + *Hárθam, with the latter descending from Proto-Indo-Iranian *Hártʰam (“affair; object; purpose”). For a similar construction, see Sanskrit समर्थ (samartha, “having a similar or suitable aim or object”).
