Derived from Proto-Iranian *ham- (together, joint) + *Hárθam, with the latter descending from Proto-Indo-Iranian *Hártʰam (affair; object; purpose). For a similar construction, see Sanskrit समर्थ (samartha, having a similar or suitable aim or object).
