henned-up (comparative more henned-up, superlative most henned-up)

  1. (of a male turkey) Surrounded by a harem of female turkeys and unlikely to move in response to a call.
    • 2003, Massachusetts Wildlife - Volumes 53-54, page 31:
One of the biggest obstacles most turkey hunters will face is dealing with henned-up toms. They've already gathered their harem, and are in no hurry to leave them for the proverbial "bird in the bush."
    • 2006, Brian Lovett, Hunting Pressured Turkeys, page 145:
And just when things seem darkest, turkeys pile it on by going silent, acting weird, getting henned-up, or just otherwise going into a funk.
    • 2009, Brian Lovett, Hunting Tough Turkeys, page 61:
Even the world's greatest turkey callers know the value of stealth and low-level relocation. Often the only way you can kill a henned-up gobbler is to use cover or the terrain to slip close enough for an ambush or bushwhack.
