Presumably from Proto-Germanic *haljōrūnō. A possible cognate of Gothic *𐌷𐌰𐌻𐌾𐍉𐍂𐌿𐌽𐌰 (*haljōruna) (mentioned in a Latin text in the form of haliurunna (witch)); see the Latin entry for details. More at hellrūna.
