From Old English *hessian, *hetsian, from Proto-West Germanic *hatisōn, from Proto-Germanic *hatisōną. Compare Gothic 𐌷𐌰𐍄𐌹𐌶𐍉𐌽 (hatizōn, to feel hate, to be angry).
